Books and whatever I feel like talking about.

Is everyone's Dashboard messed up or is it just me?

I only have 1 or 2 posts showing, no matter how much I refresh. Same?

SPOILER ALERT!

Big Sky Boring...I mean Wedding

Big Sky Wedding - Linda Lael Miller

I'm not an avid reader of the cowboy romance theme, but I've read one or two that were infinitely better than this installment from the "First Lady of the West".

It's not that it was horrible, it was just:

Yeah right there with you, D.

About this time you may be asking what went wrong. We had a working formula, known to produce satisfactory results.

Sexy cowboy + pretty country girl + wranglers + horses =

Well that didn't happen.

The MC spent more time with their families than with each other. I kept checking the back cover to verify who the main characters were. Also there were too many cowboyisms e.g. "her heart raced like an overenthusiastic Thoroughbred busting through the starting gate ahead of the gun". Annoying.

The worst thing about this book was the misleading title. IT says clear as day Big Sky WEDDING...The wedding was in the Epilogue. The Epilogue people! WTF.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads

I just saw this on GR...Please take note of the shelf name.

Yep...

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Hi ******,

Thank you so much for participating in the giveaway I organised here on Goodreads to promote my latest dystopian novella The Waves. The book has only been out for a few days now, and it's great to see how many people thought it looked interesting! Unfortunately (I hate being the bearer of bad news...!), you didn't win the paperback edition. Over a thousand people entered, so chances were slim, of course! Still, I’m sorry I won’t be able to send you a physical copy for free.
If you own an e-reader, you can still get the book for ALMOST free (99 cents) on Amazon and Smashwords during launch week, though, in case you’re interested :)

Once again, thank you for taking an interest in my latest release, and have a very nice day!

Best wishes from Holland,
Jen Minkman.

I don't know if I should respond or just ignore it. o.O?

Cry in the Night

A Cry In The Night - Mary Higgins Clark This was read as a recommendation from a co-worker. Overall, I have to say that this book was predictable. I'm told that some people find comfort in the predictability of an author. Apparently, I'm not one of those people. I told another co-worker exactly how it would end when I hit page 15. I was not wrong. I found myself sighing quite a bit as I read this. I don't know why I even bothered to read it as I tend to stay away from books people claim are the "best book ever" or "couldn't put it down once I started". I think since the recommendation came from a non-reader, I thought it had to be somewhat good to entice them. Yeah...shoulda stuck with my gut. I've read later books by this author which I found to be enjoyable and am assuming that since this was an early book, it lacked the polish that comes with experience. Thoughts on main Characters (may contain spoilers):Jenny MacPartland Krueger- Hated her. Apparently the Feminist movement moved right on by her. I thought there would be more grit from her. Wrong! Completely clueless until it was too late. I hate her even more for getting so easily and quickly swept away by this stranger when she has two young children to think about. She's a New Yorker for goodness sake. Where is that New York cynicism? Erich [Ted Bundy] Krueger- Is it any coincidence that his name is also the name of a famous Horror icon? I'm surprised that his farm wasn't on Elm Street. Like the famous serial killer, he was polished, polite and "such a nice man" (read: rich). It basically comes down to this. Krueger Farm = Bates Motel
Angelfire - Courtney Allison Moulton

Not the best thing I've read but very entertaining. Some things were predictable, some things I didn't see coming. The love story between the two main characters was pretty predictable ans angsty....kind of similar to the relationship in Fallen. Some characters really intrigued me and I hope that we find out more about them in the next book. An easy enjoyable read if you like Angels v. Demons plot lines.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Jaz Parks Series #1)

Once Bitten, Twice Shy - Jennifer Rardin Jaz Parks is quickly becoming a favorite character. She is snarky and deadly. What a great combination.
To Hell and Back - Lilith Saintcrow

At the conclusion of this series, I find my heart racing from the adrenaline rush that is the life of Dante Valentine. Wow...You'll laugh and cry and scream in frustration as you journey with Dante and Japhrimel to Hell and Back ...literally. The only bad things I can say is that it was kind of dry in the bedroom department and that there are only five books in the series.

Guilty Pleasures - Laurell K. Hamilton Have to say it.... not a huge fan of Anita Blake. Love Love Love Jean Claude though. I find Anita to be weak and annoying. She's got lots of attitude but nothing to really back it up. As an Animator she has lots of power but doesn't do you much good in a face off with a vampire. Additionally, she isn't very smart about her decisions. Gives herself loads of good advice but doesn't take it. It is somewhat disappointing. I hope, like good wine, it will get better over time.
Fallen - Lauren Kate I'm not sure what all the hype was about to be honest. For two thirds of the book I was completely bored. It was a sad slow story about a girl who sees shadows, has serious issues with keeping a boyfriend and is strangely drawn to a guy who treats her like a Katy Perry song. I kept asking myself when am I going to get to the good part. The last third of the story finally got interesting but it was like cramming for a final exam when you haven't paid attention all year; too much to take in all at once. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I spent less time suffering through Luce's Pity Party and more time on other characters PoVs. The storyline IMO needed to have better structure. It was like the author(no offense) got lost along the way and then all of a sudden realized that she needed to wrap it up. Like going on vacation and waiting to go sight-seeing until an hour before your flight back home. Perhaps the next book will fair better.
Midnight Awakening - Lara Adrian It's getting a little predictable but I don't care. Loved it!
Death by Darjeeling - Laura Childs It was a little predictable. Think Murder She Wrote but with a younger red head and tea shop owner instead of mystery writer. IMO it was too unrealistic to draw you in completely and really too lighthearted. I just kept thinking that if this were real life she would have been arrested for obstruction of justice or interfering with a criminal investigation. Overall an enjoyable read. If you are a tea lover, you will crave a cup while reading this. Comes with a recipe.
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini It has been a long time since I last read something that moved me so much. My stomach is in knots and head hurts from being farklempt. I don't even have words to describe this book. It was beautifully heart-wrenching. So much pain, but so much joy. So much hurt but so much love and forgiveness. It truly speaks to the strength of family bonded by blood and family bonded by something stronger and deeper. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Meridian - Amber Kizer It was ok but not spectacular. It felt kind of rushed in some parts...especially the ending. It's just speculation on my part but it seems like the author has very strong views on organized religion, not necessarily positive (just an observation). I feel that the story could be developed more providing more back story on the Fenestra/Aternocti and the character Tens. But over all wasn't a bad story.

Water for Elephants: A Novel

Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen I absolutely loved this book. It really draws you in and keeps you interested in the story. It was fascinating to get a glimpse of the seedier side of circus life behind all the glitz and glamor.
